Lesia Crumpton-Young Announced as a 2023 National TRIO Achiever Award Recipient

Lesia Crumpton-Young, PhD, MBA, was awarded the 2023 National TRIO Achiever Award by the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE). Each year, the organization recognizes outstanding individuals who participated in the Federal TRIO Programs.

Crumpton-Young has immensely impacted higher education, specifically for marginalized students. During her tenure as Texas Southern University president, Crumpton-Young was hailed as a transformative leader with a vision to achieve unprecedented success at an accelerated pace. Throughout her 30-year tenure in Higher Education, President Crumpton-Young was an avid supporter of TRIO programs. While in high school, President Young participated in the Upward Bound program at Texas Christian University.

Other TRIO Achiever Award recipients include Cheryl L. Johnson, U.S. House of Representatives clerk; James T. Brett, CEO of The New England Council; Ruben Candeo, co-chair of the University of California Systemwide Basic Needs Committee; and Fernando Cardenas, Director of Partnership and Community Activation at COMCAST.

The Council for Opportunity in Education recognized the TRIO alumni during its Educational Opportunity Dinner on Tuesday, September 12, at 7:30 pm at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

“I am truly honored to receive this award, the Upward Bound program helped to transform my life and instilled within me the desire to work diligently to transform the lives of others,” says Crumpton-Young.
